Welcome to Equinelle’s Junior Club & Play!
The Equinelle Junior Club & Play is a non-profit program established in 2015 with the goal of offering golf to local children, ages 8-16, who wouldn’t ordinarily have the opportunity to get out on the golf course to play. With support from the community, in 2015, this program was able to provide 13 juniors with full junior playing privileges at the Equinelle Golf Course, golf clubs as required, teaching clinics, and tournaments. In 2016 we increased this number to 15. The program is about providing the opportunity of getting out and playing golf and having fun while at the same time contributing to learning some basic rules of golf, etiquette, speed of play and enhancing golf skills. Note that the number of juniors offered this opportunity each year will be dependent on the funding the program has been able to acquire and the number of qualified applicants’ applying.
A key ingredient to the program is each junior is paired up with a “Buddy” who will be someone they can play golf with or just ask golf related advice and/or questions. Buddies are seasoned golfers of the Equinelle Golf Course who volunteer their time to the program. Each week the junior is expected to either go to the driving range or play golf with their designated buddy and is encouraged to play other times with their friends or family.
How are juniors selected for the program? Every spring juniors who are interested in the program will be asked to fill in an application that will allow them to describe their interest in golf and confirm that they:
- Are 8-15 years old as of May 1st that year;
- reside in North Grenville, On;
- can come out to the course at least 1-2 times a week; and
- have their own transportation to and from the golf course.
Note that Junior Club and Play participants from prior years must reapply and are not given any preference over other applicants.
Each program application must be accompanied by a sealed nomination from a non-family member that explains why this junior should have the opportunity to try golf or why they may need our support to continue developing their golf skills. The selection committee will review these applications and associated nominations and look for juniors that would most benefit from the program. At this time the parent(s) or guardian(s) of each of the selected juniors will also be contacted to confirm their level of commitment and transportation arrangements and the individual nominating the junior may also be contacted.
Although it is not required that the junior be able to play golf we do want to ensure they are ready, and comfortable, to be left with a golf instructor and can follow some basic golf techniques. To assess this all selected juniors will be invited to a clinic at the golf course before they are officially accepted as a Junior Club and Play participant for that season.
What should each junior member expect? Junior golfers who are ultimately accepted into the program and their parent(s) or guardian(s) will be asked to meet with committee members to sign a yearly membership contract, a privacy form and an equipment loan form (if required). The juniors will then attend an orientation clinic to learn all the rules and regulations for the program. As part of the orientation they will be provided a set of golf clubs and bag, if they do not already have a set, and will be paired with their designated Junior Club and Play “Buddy”. As stated above this is someone who they can play golf with or just ask golf related advice and/or questions. We have found that by having someone the junior, and parent(s) or guardian(s), can reach out to at the golf course the junior feels more comfortable coming out to the course and playing and over time, with the help of their Buddy, the junior meets more juniors that they can play with.
In addition to golf clubs and playing privileges, throughout the season additional golf lessons and tournaments specifically tailored for Junior Club and Play juniors will also be organized.
What happens at the end of the season? At the end of each season there will be a closing BBQ and tournament. Those juniors, that have borrowed golf clubs, will also be asked to return the clubs and bag in the same shape and condition they received it in so it can be reused next season. They and their parent(s) or guardian(s) will also be asked to complete a feedback form to outline what worked and didn’t work for them.
Community Support Makes a Difference! The Equinelle Junior Club & Play program is funded through community sponsors and events. It is supported 100% by volunteers so all our donations and funds raised goes directly to the growing the game of golf and increasing the potential for an active life style and positive self-esteem for some of our local children. The program provides opportunities to play the game at no cost, so that children can continue to progress and advance in the game of golf. Golf is the game of a lifetime and every child should have the opportunity to participate in the sport without the high cost of initial investments in equipment and golf fees.
